The war against history continues to escalate, while dissent is discouraged using a variety of threats. We run the risk of repeating something like Sacramento’s darkest days of forgetting, but on a national scale. All citizens should be wary of the rising amnesia.
Luckily, we are offering a couple of opportunities to learn about these “Lost Sacramentos” and the political turmoil that helped wipe them off the map. One event is as easy as turning on the radio for 20 minutes, and the other is a bit of work but will get you in position for the Archives Crawl – an amazing multi-institution open house.
Monday, September 22, ~12:40 pm we’ll be the closing guests on the CapRadio local news show, Insight. This will be a brief appearance in which we’ll focus on how Sacramento’s history went haywire through the suppression of dissenting voices and the forgetting of difficult lessons and marginalized communities. Listen in at 90.9 or capradio.org. Audio will be archived if you want to listen at a more convenient time.
Saturday, October 4, at 1:00 pm we’re the featured presenters at the Sacramento Archives Crawl. This free annual event is a joint open house featuring tours of some vaults as well as a chance to learn about numerous historic organizations from around the region. Shuttle buses are available for the event, which runs 10-4. We are presenting at the Central Library’s Sacramento Room, which houses special collections and is worth checking out. We’ll offer a deeper dive here, with lots of slides about these disappeared towns and their transportation network.
